Safely Remove Moss, Algae, Mould & Black Stains from your Roof!

Due to our wet, humid climate on the west coast, roofs throughout Vancouver and the Fraser Valley are often plagued with a combination of Moss, Algae, Fungi, Lichen and ugly black streaks on their roof.  Not only is it unpleasing to the eye but it also causes significant damage to your roof shakes/shingles if not protected and maintained. If left unattended year after year, it will likely result in water leaks and/or the premature replacement of your roof.

Moss, Algae, Fungi, Lichen all thrive in areas on your roof that primarily face north, receive little or no sun, and have areas of the roof are covered or shaded by overhanging trees/branches. As well, loose debris on your roof such as pine needles and leaves create shade and provide an excellent breeding ground for Moss, Algae, Fungi so it is very important to clean the roof off yearly to minimize any and all organic growth.

No matter where you live on the west coast whether it’s South Surrey or West Vancouver, Moss, Fungi, Algae and Black Streaks will inevitably start growing on your roof if not properly protected and cleaned on a regular basis. Moss, Fungus, Algae and Black streaks will attach itself to all types of roofing material including Asphalt, Cedar, Clay, Slate and Composite materials (Recycled plastics etc) and will damage the roofing shingles.

Application of Roof Moss Treatment

Our Moss Treatment Process involves applying a heavy coat of our eco-friendly Moss Treatment to all sections of the roof. As we apply our Organic, Hydrogen-Peroxide based Moss Treatment, you will immediately see your roof foam up and turn white. What you are seeing are the billions and billions of active hydrogen-peroxide bubbles penetrating the organic matter living on your roof.  As the Moss Treatment runs down the roof and into the gutters, you will see that the moss treatment is brown and dirty as much of the organic growth is being carried away during the initial application. In time, and with significant rainfall, the rest of the moss and black stains will continue to fall off and fade away leaving your roof looking virtually brand new again.

Our eco-friendly Moss treatment ensures that we do not have to use any abrasive techniques including power washing or harsh chemicals such as Chlorine Bleach to remove all organic growth from your roof.

Depending on the severity of the roof stains and age of the roof, sometimes two applications of our moss treatment may be necessary to lift-up and remove years and years of algae growth.

WE DO NOT USE CHLORINE BLEACH/SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE  DUE TO ITS TOXIC & DAMAGING EFFECTS ON VEGETATION & MARINE LIFE

Asphalt Shingle Moss Removal & Treatment Process

Almost every single roof in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland will have some sort of organic growth on it as our climate provides the perfect environment for moss and algae to grow. Left unattended year after year, the moss will grow and ingrain itself into the shingle, essentially loosening the protective granular coating that provides protection to the rubber matting underneath it. To ensure minimal granular loss, we gently brush/broom the surface of the shingles removing the medium to large clumps of moss and allowing the moss which tightly ingrained into the butt end of the shingle to be removed by the moss treatment gently over time.

Cedar Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal Process

Cedar Shake & Shingle Roof Cleaning can be completed two different ways depending on the age of your roof, desired outcome, and budget. Cedar roofs are either cedar shake or cedar shingle, what differentiates itself from each other is size, thickness and type of cut; flat grain or edge grain. Most roofs in Vancouver are 5/8” cedar shake and generally last up to 20 years before replacement is needed.

Tile Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal Process

Tile Roof Cleaning can also be completed a few different ways depending on the desired outcome and budget. Tile roofs come in two shapes: Rippled or Flat. The Rippled Tiles are often on older homes as these types of tiles have now been replaced with a modern looking flat tile. Flat Tile Roofs are generally easier to clean versus rippled tile as the concave/convex texture of the ripple tile makes it tough for brooms, brushes, and small hand tools to remove moss which is ingrained into the tile.

Roof Cleaning, Moss Removal & Moss Treatment for Different Types of Roofs

It is important to remove all moss & algae from your roof to add longevity to your roof. Vancouver's wet weather provides the perfect breeding ground for moss and algae to flourish. Worst of all, the moss will deteriorate most types of roofing materials over time if not maintained regularly. Recently, insurance companies have started to void home insurance if the roof has moderate-heavy moss growth.

In Vancouver, demossing your roof is extremely important in keeping the roof in good condition. If moss is allowed to build up on your roof, it will eventually damage the roofing materials and will result in expensive repairs or replacement of your roof.

Due to the large, overhanging trees in Vancouver, regular annual roof cleaning will be required. It is important to remove all debris including dead foliage such as leaves, twigs, branches, pine needles, and other organic growth from the roof. Dead roofing debris can affect water runoff and drainage, so it is best to have your roof and gutters cleaned once every year or more if you have large trees surrounding your home.

 Eco-Friendly Moss Treatment for Roofs

To stop moss and algae from damaging your roof, we apply our eco-friendly Moss Treatment to all roof sections after the roof cleaning and moss removal have been completed. Applying this moss treatment will remove the last remaining moss on your roof and will dramatically inhibit any regrowth of moss on your roof for years to come.

Our Organic, Hydrogen Peroxide based Moss Treatment is Chlorine & Bleach-Free and will safely kill all moss and algae on your roof. It is safe around all plants and vegetation and will not stain or discolor any surfaces. Our Moss Treatment is safe on all types of roofs and comes with a 2 Year Moss-Free Warranty

WE DO NOT USE CHLORINE BLEACH/SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE  DUE TO ITS TOXIC & DAMAGING EFFECTS ON VEGETATION & MARINE LIFE

Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal for Asphalt Roofs

Roof moss removal from asphalt shingles is crucial in preventing further granular loss. In time, moss will grow and become ingrained within the protective granular coating of the shingle. If left neglected even longer, moss will start to grow under and lift the shingle, resulting in damage and costly repairs.

Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material used in Vancouver and the lower mainland. It is crucial that moss does not get ingrained in the shingle as removing the moss will result in possible shingle damage if completed by an inexperienced roof technician.

Durroid Shingles are very similar to asphalt shingles as they both have rubber matting used as the base material of the shingle with granules on top protecting it from UV rays and other weather elements. These roofs should be cleaned in the same manner as Asphalt roofs

Much like Asphalt Shingles, Durroid is also manufactured the same, however, it is no longer available as new roofing materials such as Fiberglass Laminate shingles have replaced it. To maintain a clean roof, a light brushing and application of our hydrogen-peroxide-based moss treatment will kill and remove the moss and black staining from your roof.

Remember, Asphalt and Fiberglass Laminate Shingles should NEVER be power washed as it will cause significant granular loss and damage to the shingle.

Cedar Roof Cleaning, Moss Removal, and Cedar Roof Restoration

Depending on the age and condition of your cedar roof, it may have:

1) Rotting cedar shakes or shingles due to moss, algae, and other organic material.

or

2) Dried out and warped shingles from sun damage.

Both can often leave aged cedar shakes and shingles extremely brittle and weak.

Cedar Roofs are installed by having a row of cedar shakes fastened down followed by another row of staggered cedar shakes on top of it. Think of it like a brick wall, bricks are not laid directly above each other; rather they are staggered so that the wall has more structural integrity. With that said, cedar roofs still offer numerous areas for moss and algae to thrive.

The space in between each cedar shake or shingle (called a Keyway) offers moss and algae a perfect breeding ground. Other areas that can be problematic can be the overgrowth of moss on the butt end of the shakes and in some cases underneath the cedar shake. If moss is found underneath your cedar shakes or shingles you should try not to walk on the roof as moss grows outwards, creating unevenness in the shakes that may lead to splitting and cracking of the cedar shakes when walked on. If this is the case we have specialized equipment that will allow us to treat your roof without ever setting foot on it, ensuring no roof damage occurs.

There are Two Options for removing moss from Cedar Roofs: Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal or Cedar Roof Restoration

Option 1: Cedar Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal, the process is to remove the moss with a light brushing followed by the application of our Moss Treatment.

Option 2: Cedar Roof Restoration includes roof repair, moss treatment, soft wash of the entire roof, and application of our Cedar Shake Protector which will leave your cedar roof looking brand new.

Cedar Shingles and shakes are widely used in West Vancouver and South Surrey. Cedar is a premium roofing material, but if left neglected, dead foliage can break down and get packed within the keyways. The "Keyways" is the space in between the shingles and must be free and clear for proper drainage

Tile Roof Cleaning, Moss Removal, and Tile Roof Restoration

Tile roofs can be found everywhere throughout Vancouver and the Fraser Valley as it is a durable product that lasts for years-if properly maintained that is. The problem is that many of these roofs have moss buildup due to the climate we live in. Roof cleaning and moss removal should be done every year or two to minimize any organic growth such as moss that may be growing under loose roof debris such as dead leaves and pine needles etc. However, if you notice a fair bit of moss up on the roof and you haven’t had it cleaned or treated with a moss inhibitor in the last 3-5 years, then you the homeowner should not attempt to walk on it, nor should anyone else UNLESS they are an experienced roofer.

Remember, most companies out there offering roof cleaning and moss removal services have inexperienced, seasonal employees that do not have the knowledge and know-how to properly service and maintain a roof-let alone a tile roof. The reason I say that is because tile roofs offer some of the best breeding ground for moss growth since it is installed as a layered product which in turn leaves gaps/areas where moss can get up under the tile and grow, resulting in shifting tiles. If this is the case any inexperienced seasonal employee or exterior cleaning contractor who walks on the roof may end up cracking tiles resulting in water leaks.

Once our Tile Roof Technicians have removed the bulk of the moss on the roof, they will apply our organic, Hydrogen-Peroxide based Moss Treatment, that when applied will kill and shrink all moss growth on your entire roof. We can also apply this product most times with minimal foot traffic on your roof as we have specialized equipment that allows us to apply our moss treatment up to 25ft away if the roof is too steep to access. Our specialized moss spray application will ensure no roof tile damage will be caused to your roof and that the moss can gradually die/fall off and allow the roof tiles to resettle naturally in their original position.

There are Two Options for removing moss from Tile Roofs: Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal or Tile Roof Restoration:

Option 1: Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal method, the moss can be lightly brushed off and then the roof treated with our Moss Treatment.

Option 2: Tile Roof Restoration includes roof repair, moss treatment, soft wash of entire roof, and application of Tile Roof Protector (many colours available).

The first option is gradual as we depend on mother nature’s rain to gently clean the roof, the latter option provides instant curb appeal, however the cost is substantially higher
